IMT-GT:

Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) idea was initiated by former Prime Minister of Malaysia, H.E. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad. In 1993, the former President of Indonesia, H.E. Suharto, Prime Minister of Thailand, H.E. Chuan Leekpai and HE. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad was endorsed the formalisation of IMT-GT in Langkawi, Malaysia.

IMT-GT provides a sub-regional framework for accelerating economic cooperation and integration of the member states and provinces in the three countries.

The IMT-GT promotes private-sector-led economic growth and facilitates the development of the sub-region as a whole by exploiting the underlying complementarities and comparative advantages of the member countries.

IMT-GT MISSION & VISION

IMT-GT envisions a seamless, progressive, prosperous and peaceful subregion with improved quality of life.

WORKING GROUP

The seven strategic pillars denote the key focus areas that are expected to produce the most significant economic and social impact on the IMT-GT subregion. These pillars are divided into three Lead Focus Areas that are supported by four Enablers.

The Lead Focus Areas comprise the Agriculture & Agro-Based Industry, Tourism, and Halal Products and Services Pillars. It is intended that they will spearhead IMT-GT cooperation and integration for the next two decades. These lead focus areas were selected based on careful evaluation of the comparative and competitive advantage of the subregion.

The four Enablers will support the Lead Focus Areas and comprise the Transport and ICT Connectivity, Trade and Investment Facilitation, Environment, and Human Resource Development, Education and Culture Pillars.

DSD & IMT-GT COLLABORATION

Ministry of Human Resources is a member of the Human Resource Development Working Group under the Human Resource Development, Education and Culture Pillars. DSD works closely in matters relating to skills development

19TH IMT-GT STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING
 
Date: 24 - 26 February, 2026
Venue: Bangkok, Thailand

The 19th IMT-GT Strategic Planning Meeting (SPM) was held from 24 to 26 February 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the following objectives:
i. To assess the current progress of initiatives and projects under the Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) framework;
ii. To review the strategic direction, priorities, and deliverables of the Working Groups for the next phase; and
iii. To strengthen coordination and collaboration among member countries and IMT-GT implementing partners.

The Working Group evaluated the three primary indicators of the current cycle and identified necessary strategic shifts which consist of Upskilling 100+ Trainees/Trainers, Synchronization of Competency Skill Standards, and Utilization of Digital Labor Market Information (LMI) System

Indonesia Malaysia Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Strengthening Of Welding Trainers In The Subregion (ToT On Welding)

The Thailand International Cooperation Agency, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in collaboration with the Department of Skill Development Thailand, Ministry of Labour Thailand, under the framework of the Working Group on Human Resource Development (WGHRD), extended an invitation to the International Division, Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia to participate in the programme entitled “Strengthening of Welding Trainers in the Subregion” held in Samut Prakan, Thailand.

This programme is an initiative under the IMT-GT Implementation Blueprint (IB) 2022–2026, involving subregional cooperation among Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, whereby Malaysia was represented by two TVET instructors from Centre for Instructor and Advanced Skill Training, Department of Skills Development Malaysia.

Throughout the ISO 9606 (Qualification Testing of Welders) course, participants acquired new knowledge on the certification requirements for welders in accordance with international standards, with emphasis on qualification scopes based on welding processes as specified under ISO 4063.
